Adenoid cystic carcinoma (ACC) is a rare form of adenocarcinoma that begins in the glandular tissue. It commonly develops in the salivary glands or other regions of the head and neck but can also occur in other parts of the body. ACC tumors are characterized by a distinctive histological pattern of abnormal “nests” or cords of epithelial cells that surround or infiltrate ducts or glandular structures within the affected organ. These structures are typically filled with a mucous-like material or contain abnormal fibrous membranes, apparent during the microscopic evaluation of tumor cells.<\/p>\n

ACC is a low-grade malignancy with slow growth. It is rarely invasive and infiltrates nearby lymph nodes and perineural spaces, but it has a tendency for local recurrence, and in approximately half of the patients, it spreads to distant bodily sites, particularly the lungs, resulting in life-threatening complications.
