What started as a dream for then 15-year-old Maggie Grout seven years ago became a reality as Thinking Huts, a non-profit she founded, began building and opening 3D printed schools in Madagascar. Thinking Huts is an international NGO that increases global access to education with innovative, humanitarian-driven technology solutions. Despite a global pandemic, Thinking Huts opened the world\u2019s second 3D printed school earlier this year.<\/div>\n

Thinking Huts is supporting learning where it is needed most in the world. The newest school project named “Bougainvillea” took about 18 hours of total print time for the walls and about 12 days for the roof, door, and windows which were comprised of local materials.<\/p>\n

Honeycomb is a campus that will be serving three villages of children ages 4-16 on the west coast of Madagascar. Drawing inspiration and symbolism from the beehive, the school brings people together and it only functions when everyone is committed to seeing it thrive. By leveraging 3D construction printing, Thinking Huts builds schools in a fraction of the time and can reduce CO2 emissions by limiting the amount of construction waste produced.  As they get closer to reaching economies of scale, the aspirational goal is for per unit costs to be under 20,000 and for the construction process to be under a week.<\/p>\n

According to the World Bank, 97% of Malagasy children aged 10 are unable to read and understand a single sentence. Madagascar, the fifth poorest country in the world, has among the highest poverty rates and 75% of the population lives on less than $1.90 per day. There is an estimated need for over 22,000 schools in Madagascar alone due to lack of infrastructure, overcrowding, long travel distances to the nearest school, or there not being a school to attend at all.
