According to the USDA Black farmers are a dying breed accounting for less than 2 percent of the <\/span>agricultural<\/span> community in the U.S.  Those 48,000 Black producers need a voice to promote their best interests and F.A.R.M.S. is uniquely positioned to explain <\/span>their <\/span>plight.  The <\/span>community minded <\/span>organization received the welcomed news, that they were chosen as one of 50 Black <\/span>led organizations<\/span> to receive a grant from the <\/span><\/span>Jrue & Lauren Holiday Social Impact Fund.<\/span><\/p>\n

The Family Agriculture Resources Management Services<\/span> (F.A.R.M.S.)<\/span>,<\/span> serves the community by<\/span><\/span> provid<\/span>ing<\/span> legal services for Black farmers who <\/span>are disproportionately affected by adverse conditions leading to scores of farmers losing the land they <\/span>owned <\/span>for<\/span> generation<\/span>s<\/span>.  <\/span>The award-winning organization <\/span>helps farmers stay free of foreclosure while also providing much need<\/span>ed<\/span> food <\/span>in their <\/span>client’s<\/span> rural<\/span> communit<\/span>ies<\/span>.  Since 2013<\/span>,<\/span> <\/span>th<\/span>is<\/span> grassroots powerhouse<\/span> <\/span>has <\/span>distributed<\/span> more than $200,000 in emergency <\/span>monies <\/span>and donated 1.5 million pounds of produce.<\/span><\/span> <\/span><\/p>\n

Founding d<\/span>irector Jillian <\/span>Hishaw<\/span> is <\/span>encouraged <\/span>by the <\/span>donation<\/span> <\/span>and recognition by<\/span> the <\/span><\/span>Jrue & Lauren Holiday Social Impact Fund<\/span> saying <\/span><\/span>“We are elated to be chosen as 1 of 50 Black business participants!  This donation will help us protect many more Black farms legally and donate from produce in rural farming communities across the US<\/span>.<\/span>” <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

The charitable fund was started in 2020 by legendary basketball player Jrue Holiday and his wife, <\/span>two-time<\/span> Olympic gold medalist Lauren Holiday.  The <\/span>6’3” <\/span>Milwaukee Bucks<\/span> <\/span>defender <\/span>donated the remainder of his NBA annual salary to give Black businesses and organizations a <\/span>leg up.  <\/span>The pair were compelled to come to the aid of Black businesses who were systematically marginalized<\/span> and through <\/span>this round of funding<\/span>, the foundation is distributing <\/span>one<\/span> million dollars in unrestricted funds among 25 Black owned businesses and 25 <\/span><\/span>Black-led nonprofit organizations. <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

In 2020<\/span> F.A.R.M.S<\/span>.,<\/span> <\/span>received<\/span> the <\/span><\/span>Unsung Business Award from Shea Moisture and the Black Business Relief Award from We Buy Black and Shea Moisture.  <\/span>Hishaw is grateful for all of the recent attention afforded <\/span>to <\/span>Black farmers and looks forward to a brighter future for the farming community.<\/span><\/span>
