[Photo\/China National Space Administration]<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Linpu, an ancient town in Xiaoshan district, Hangzhou, East China&#8217;s Zhejiang province,&nbsp;recently went viral on the internet after China&#8217;s Martian rover Zhurong started&nbsp;to&nbsp;explore&nbsp;the&nbsp;Red Planet on&nbsp;May&nbsp;22.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">From the images released by the China National Space Administration, many&nbsp;<a rel=\"nofollow\" href=\"http:\/\/www.ehangzhou.gov.cn\" target=\"_blank\">Hangzhou<\/a>&nbsp;natives were&nbsp;surprised&nbsp;to&nbsp;find that there was a crater named Linpu in the rover&#8217;s exploration area.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Linpu town in Xiaoshan district used to be an important business area and will host part of the Asian Games Hangzhou 2022. &#8220;I did not see it coming. I know our hometown is famous in China,&nbsp;but not on Mars,&#8221; said a native surnamed Wang who is an avid&nbsp;space enthusiast.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">In the <em>Recommended Translations&nbsp;of&nbsp;Names for Martian Locations<\/em>&nbsp;released by the Chinese Astronomical Society on Aug 25, 2020, the crater is labeled as &#8220;Linpu town, Xiaoshan district, Hangzhou, Zhejiang province&#8221; in Chinese.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.abnewswire.com\/uploads\/4de588c89523ce4c7aa302b6ad741313.jpg\" alt=\"\" \/><em><br \/>Linpu Crater is introduced on the website of the US Geological Survey. [Photo\/zjol.com.cn]<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">According to the International Astronomical Union,&nbsp;the world&#8217;s largest professional body for astronomers, Linpu Crater, which was approved and registered in 1976, has a diameter of 18.16 kilometers. It neighbors a vast plain called Utopia Planitia in the northern Martian hemisphere.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Popular Science&nbsp;magazine suggests that Martian craters&#8217; names were usually picked by astronomers. Most of them came from Greek mythology, the big ones were often named after distinguished scientists or writers, while&nbsp;the small ones may be named after cities and towns.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">As of 2018, there were 12 Martian craters named after Chinese locations.
