The United Fuel Buyers of Long Island Co-op announced that it has negotiated an agreement with several local fuel oil suppliers to provide discounted pricing on home heating oil for local residents and businesses.

UFBLI has reached an agreement with some of Long Island’s top oil companies, securing a price protection plan for their members. Because of the negotiated cap on the margin that oil dealers are allowed to charge over the daily market price, members are protected from price-gouging all year long, especially during the coldest months when they need the most oil.

“We exist for two reasons: to negotiate deals with local fuel suppliers for residents to save on their heating bills, and to promote conservation and energy sustainability as best we can,” said Kristy Morgan, administrative director at UFBLI. “We re-negotiate each year with fuel suppliers around the region to achieve the best possible rates for our members,” Morgan further explained. “We evaluate offers and then go back and forth with company representatives until something comes forth that matches our criteria. I have talked to senior groups who’ve burst into tears when they realized the savings they could get, joining forces to purchase fuel.”

The co-op is expanding its activities to include energy conservation and alternative energy that will support a more sustainable environment. There are no membership fees or contracts to sign. To fill out an application and for pricing details please visit UFBLI.org.

Among items that UFBLI helps residents with is education about making their home more energy efficient. They stress the importance of annual maintenance on boilers and water heaters as a means of increasing efficiency and energy sustainability, along with regular free home energy audits provided by NYSERDA and other entities.
