He joined the Navy at the age of seventeen. After being medically discharged as a disabled veteran, Bruce went on to attend Fort Hays State University in Western Kansas and then completed his education at the University of Illinois where he majored in History, Business and Literature. Bruce has worked as a sworn Peace Officer, Director of Operations for the Midwest hub of a major American corporation, a school teacher at a juvenile detention center, president of a mid-sized trucking company, and as a financial advisor with the Department of the Navy. Bruce and his family lived in Europe for several years before to returning to settle in Helena, Montana.
