A journey of 2,653 miles on foot, amidst horrifying conditions and unimaginable dangers of violence, rape, theft, robbery, and even death. La Ruta<\/em> is a University of Southern California MFA thesis film that sheds light on the realities of the migrants taking this journey to the USA, from the eyes of a mother and daughter.<\/p>\n The film follows Lucia, a desperate mother fleeing from her home in Guatemala to keep her young daughter safe. She needs to survive the route of death before she finds sanctuary in America. During her journey, she meets Matias, an offhanded father making the journey with his son, Nicolas. Lucia and Matias are different parents, bound together on one courageous journey to freedom. Together they face all the challenges along the way until at one point, the harsh realities of la ruta force them to make unimaginable choices.<\/p>\n The narrative film will change the way people see Central American migrants by giving them a first-hand look into the conditions they must go through in order to survive the horrifying journey to the U.S. border. The story will be an intimate portrayal of universal experience in today’s globalized society. With raw truths that will help provide a deeper understanding of the importance of family.
