Garden Grove Unified School District has been celebrating as Bell Intermediate School, which serves seventh and eighth grade students, was named a Model Middle School in the 2017-2018 national Schools to Watch-Taking Center Stage program. A celebration was held in the school’s quad in February, as staff, students, parents, district administrators, Board of Education members, and community leaders came together to commemorate the prestigious award. <\/span><\/p>\n

The recognition is a top honor that the California Department of Education awards to high-performing middle schools. Bell Intermediate School is one of 22 schools in California to receive this exciting award since 2003. According to the California Department of Education, Model Schools selected in the Schools to Watch-Taking Center Stage program all demonstrate academic excellence, social equity, and responsiveness to the needs of their students. They are selected based on a competitive and rigorous review process to identify the most impactful middle schools that can be an example to other schools as real-world success models. <\/span><\/p>\n

Receiving this award means that Bell Intermediate staff, students, and parents have worked hard to become leaders in achieving high academic standards. School-wide, the focus at Bell has been on closing the gap between students and success. Staff and students are encouraged to create a culture of kindness and acceptance, and mentoring and after-school tutoring programs are offered for math and literacy skills. <\/span><\/p>\n

Bell Intermediate School was honored again at a ceremony in Sacramento in March, where the award was received by Bell Principal M’Liss Patterson. Bell was one of only three Orange County schools to be presented with this title for the 2017-2018 school year. Bell will again be presented with recognition as a National School to Watch at a ceremony in June held in Washington DC. <\/span><\/p>\n
