After contagious and life-threatening outbreaks, like the Ebola outbreak in 2014, scientists and doctors have begun to understand what causes such infectious diseases and assess its harm to specific communities, to combat the potential of the disease spreading globally. The Royal Society<\/a> Publishing’s, “Global Rise in Human Infectious Disease Outbreaks”, cited a large-scale study, which examined the rise in outbreaks and rise in number of different diseases between 1980 and 2015. Such rise has makes it “increasingly important to prepare for these outbreaks and ensure that the general public is aware of prevention plans,” adding that, “The same study also found global preparedness helps to minimize these outbreaks and ensure more people survive them. CRACKED<\/a>’s “5 Scientific Reasons A Zombie Apocalypse Could Happen” by TE Sloth<\/em> and David Wong<\/em> showcases previous films that have foreshadowed the spread of disease, which creates a zombie-like state.<\/p>\n

Sloth<\/em> and Wong<\/em> first allude to a common type of brain parasites that “seems to devote its entire existence to being terrifying”, Toxoplasmosa, which has plagued half of the Earth’s human population. It causes its victims to turn into “mindless, zombie-like slaves” and go “batshit insane”. As it’s been tested on rats, which are similar to humans, Sloth<\/em> and Wong <\/em>stated, “All it takes is a more evolved version of toxoplasmosa, one that could to do us what it does to the rats.”<\/p>\n

Second is “the Real Rage Virus”, as seen in the ‘28 Days Later’, which “was a virus that turned human beings into mindless killing machines” (Sloth<\/em> and Wong<\/em>). Though machines don’t tend to take over humans’ minds in real life, there are several brain disorders, which act similarly, such as Mad Cow Disease. When cows are plagued with the infectious disease, their spinal cord and brain are attacked, turning them into “stumbling, mindless” attacking cows. But, when humans are infected, it is called Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease. Including its symptoms, the disease is rare but “proves widespread brain infections of the Rage variety are just a matter of waiting for the right disease to come along,” wrote Sloth<\/em> and Wong<\/em>.<\/p>\n

They added that Mad Cow Disease could result in a zombie-like apocalyptic state, “If the whole sudden, mindless violence idea seems far-fetched, remember that you are just one brain chemical (serotonin) away from turning into a mindless killing machine (they’ve tested it by putting rats in Deathmatch-style cages and watching them turn on each other). All it would take is a disease that destroys the brain’s ability to absorb that one chemical and suddenly it’s a real-world 28 Days Later<\/em>.”<\/p>\n
