Toronto, ON – <\/strong>Canadian science fiction author Kaz Lefave is advocating against the destruction of the environment in her Nemecene book series, in which she imagines a toxic planet flooded by dead oceans and poisonous gases, and it’s not in some distant galaxy. It’s right here, on Earth, and its human citizens caused it. <\/p>\n

Tackling the topic of the environmental crisis in her fictional series, Lefave explains, “Since the 70s, scientific research has been collecting evidence on the destructive impact of humans on the environment, while political will has stalled.”<\/p>\n

In her research, the science fiction author uncovered that the oceans are rising, acidifying, warming, losing their oxygen, becoming a plastic soup, producing more toxic algae blooms, circulating slower, and spreading marine disease at an alarming rate. In 2008, Scientific American reported “405 identified dead zones worldwide, up from 49 in the 1960s.” And according to the Virginia Institute of Marine Science Worldwide, “the number of dead zones has approximately doubled each decade since the 1960s. Looking further back, geologic evidence shows that low-oxygen ‘dead zones’ were not a naturally recurring event in most estuarine ecosystems”. Coupled with the discovery of a new 23,000 square mile dead zone in the Bay of Bengal that scientists fear could be a global tipping point, a repeat of the Great Dying of the Permian-Triassic period, some 250 million years ago, doesn’t seem like fantasy.<\/p>\n

Recent documentary filmmakers like the Rob Stewart (Sharkwater, Revolution), Josh Fox (Gasland, How To Let Go Of The World), and Franny Armstrong (The Age of Stupid) have reached an audience. Documentary series like the Years of Living Dangerously produced by James Cameron, Jerry Weintraub, and Arnold Schwarzeneger have brought the issue to primetime television.<\/p>\n

Lefave also stated, “Our imprint on the planet has even prompted a new term “Anthropocene”, coined by Paul Crutzen and Eugene Stoermer, for consideration as a potential geological epoch that started around the time of the industrial revolution. However, despite these efforts, our day-to-day habits are not changing fast enough to stop the impending human-induced mass extinction. It’s now time to attract a following not necessarily passionate about hard facts. Emotions are what drive action.” <\/p>\n
