World of Work Student Project Impresses Judges with Robot and Working App

Students at Los Coches Creek Middle School were tasked to build and program a robot and business, and market it with a website. The end result was something amazing, with videos, robots, and programs ready for presentation and ready to impress. This project was part of World of Work, a program centered on giving students the proper exposure to future careers options, especially in STEM. EDDY Pump, a local engineering and pump manufacturing company, is partnered with World of Work and was at the forefront of this ten week long project.

Two teachers from Cajon Valley Union School District and EDDY Pump CEO, marketing manager, and mechanical engineer met before the start of the assignment to create a class framework outline for the 10 week World of Work course. Their goal was to create curriculum that would get students excited about the ins and outs of building and programming robots and then creating a business and website. The end result included multiple school visits from EDDY Pump, a class visit to see the manufacturing end of the business, and concluded with cash prizes at the final presentations of the projects.

In each team, students were to build a website using WordPress, create promotional videos, and post on company social media accounts to promote their business projects. Business names, logos, and business plans were all apart of the marketing and media end of the task. The engineering end of the assignment was centered around building and programming a robot with a laptop or smartphone app connected to control the bot. The robots were to model what EDDY Pump does in real life, which is identify a problem and build a remotely operated solution.

The first place winning team, SUSPECT (Submersible Uniform, Super Pumps Excavating Controlled Terrain), was the only team to control their robot with a smartphone app. Groups Mine Ores and Excavation Innovations also showed up with excellent presentations and won 2nd and 3rd place, respectively, separated by just one point. Every group that participated not only learned about robotics, engineering, and business marketing, but also learned about teamwork, planning, and pushing themselves outside their comfort zone.

After their unique and impressive experience partnering with the World of Work program, EDDY Pump is encouraging other local businesses in the Cajon Valley Union School District to partner with World of Work and help give students the exposure and skills they need to find and succeed in a future career.
