WHITE WOLF’S ‘WORLD OF DARKNESS’ THE DOCUMENTARY: AN UNSTOPPABLE CULTURAL PHENOMENON OF RPGs + MODERN VAMPIRE CULTURE

“WORLD OF DARKNESS // DARKCOAST”
As a documentary, WORLD OF DARKNESS is “energetic, entertaining, and fast paced” (Horror Fuel) by charting the rise and fall of gaming’s most significant role-playing games while showcasing the development of modern vampire culture for those who play the game and embrace the lifestyle.

Los Angeles, CA (September 12, 2018) – DARKCOAST – Coming to U.S. audiences next week, “WORLD OF DARKNESS is a must see doc, whether you ever played the game or not. It’s a fascinating view into not only the creation of the game, but the lifestyle it catered to as well, and is fascinating from beginning to end,” reviewed Horror Fuel.

Directed by award-winning Giles Alderson (The Dare, The Heart of the Forest)and written / produced by Kevin Lee (Gaming the Real World) from Luckyday, WORLD OF DARKNESS, is a one-of-a-kind documentary about the evolution of one of the world’s most renowned role-playing franchises, White Wolf, and the exploration of the developed vampire mythology that remains popular today. Horror Fuel continued, “comprised of interviews with the creators, players, and appreciation of Vampire: The Masquerade; WORLD OF DARKNESS is a deep dive into what made the game, and White Wolf the company that created it, so special and influenced not only to the people who play the game but embrace the vampiric, Goth lifestyle as well.”

The game doc is primarily influence from its first book, Vampire: The Masquerade, which is an innovative game play that focuses on its extended universe and making relationships within this universe rather than the traditional tabletop questing. “What I found more informative is how WORLD OF DARKNESS makes the case for Vampire: The Masquerade, changing gaming culture by putting out an RPG that wasn’t about fantasy but instead featured ‘vampire punk goth’,” divulged Comics Worth Reading.

WORLD OF DARKNESS features exclusive interviews from key players, who capture the game’s evolution. The talking-head interviews come from Mark Rein-Hagen – creator of Vampire: The Masquerade, Stewart and Steve Wieck – founders of White Wolf Publishing (Stewart passed away in 2017), Tim Bradstreet –illustrator of the game manual who helped establish a modern look for the classic monsters, and additional exposes from White Wolf game designers and storytellers. Such insights show “the game makers arguing that this success was responsible for turning vampires from monsters in pop culture perception into protagonists,” continued Comics Worth Reading.

Alongside such interviews, Alderson’s game doc showcases its worldwide popularity since its inception in 1991 by explaining its social and culture phenomenon from fans and fan clubs from across the world that assisted in the evolvement of the franchise and continues to keep its legacy lively. By utilizing archived footage from LARP (live action role playing) events, “various cultural commentators who talk about gaming and monsters in popular culture, […and] select fans who are shown making up for their characters and talking about the appeal of the game” highlights the significance influence that shaped both the gaming world and pop culture worldwide.

“Let me put a beastly bow on this one. WORLD OF DARKNESS is a must see doc, whether you ever played the game or not. It’s a fascinating view into not only the creation of the game, but the lifestyle it catered to as well, and is fascinating from beginning to end,” concluded Horror Fuel.
