VehicleHistory.com, an online resource for information about used American vehicles, will now offer its VIN decoder guide as well as VIN lookups for free to all customers, the company reported today. The company’s business model allows customers to access information for free.

“At the end of 2015 we saw that we could reduce our costs for our extensive national database,” said Vanessa Hernandez, a VehicleHistory.com spokesperson. “So it made sense to pass the savings on to our customers with free VIN decoders and reports.”

A 17-digit Vehicle Identification Number, also known as a VIN, has been issued to every vehicle manufactured to be sold in North America since 1981. The VehicleHistory.com VIN decoder is a guide that lets anyone who wants to buy or sell a used vehicle learn what the first several letters and numbers in the VIN mean, she said.

“With thousands of different makes and models made over the years, decoding a VIN on one’s own is no easy task,” Hernandez said. “Our free guide helps a used car buyer or seller at least know what the first several digits mean, so they can determine that the information in the VIN matches the actual car in question.”

Free VIN lookups take the customer further into a VIN search by decoding all the digits in a VIN, she said.

“Those first few VIN digits will decode the manufacturer, make, model, and where the car was made, among other data,” she said. “But a full vehicle history report decodes the entire VIN, and that extra information can help a buyer avoid buying a lemon, or paying too much for a used car, truck, van or motorcycle.”

The full report includes the name of the current owner, mileage reports, service reports, and whether the vehicle has been reported stolen or been in a major accident, she said.

“There’s a wealth of information on the full VIN lookup report that can help both buyers and sellers,” Hernandez said. “And we’re proud to be able to provide this important service for free to anyone who is looking to buy or sell a used car.”
