Former Ray Charles Raelette Jazz Singer Cynthia Scott will join the Arkansas Black Hall of Fame on Oct 29th.
Renowned jazz soloist and former U.S. Jazz Ambassador Cynthia Scott is one of six Arkansas natives being honored by the Arkansas Black Hall Of Fame. The 24th annual induction ceremony will take place in Little Rock, Saturday, October 29, 2016 at the State House Convention Center at 7:30 p.m.
Cynthia Scott has been singing all of her life Her inspiration stems from her love of gospel music which she learned singing at her father’s church in El Dorado, her hometown. Scott made history in 1969 as the first African American to enter the previously all-white Miss El Dorado Pageant and won second place. Her big break came when she got a call out of the blue from the world famous rhythm and blues artist, Ray Charles, inviting her to be a Raelette, one of his back up singers. Scott has written about that experience in her one-woman play called One Raelette’s Journey. It will be presented at the Jubilee Theatre in Fort Worth, Texas on Nov 11th & 12th
as part of their annual fall fundraiser.
She has shared the stage with many famous vocalists and musicians – Gladys Knight and the Pips, Joe Pass, The Count Basie Orchestra, Oscar Peterson, David “Fathead” Newman, Harry Connick Jr., Lou Donaldson, Cab Calloway, Lionel Hampton, Norman Simmons and Wynton Marsalis who claimed her as “possessing the sweetest, best soulful and possessing the deepest feeling.”
In 2004, Cynthia Scott was selected as a U.S. Jazz Ambassador and sent to West Africa and France. She performed concerts and workshops in Gabon, Ghana, Nigeria, Togo, Paris, Marseille and more.
The attendees will have the opportunity to listen to the masterful, compelling voice of Cynthia Scott. Proceeds from the Hall of Fame fundraiser will be invested in African American community’s growth and development. To learn more about the upcoming induction ceremony.
