Top 4 Ways to Quit Smoking & Their Effectiveness

In most Western countries smoking tobacco/cigarettes has become an expensive vilified habit. Tobacco has been taxed to the point of making smoking economically debilitating for the masses of low income users. Unfortunately price has very little effect on users as smoking has what is known as a high elasticity of demand. It’s a smokescreen for want of a better word to raise revenue rather than squeeze people into quitting.

Whether it is for medical reasons, personal preference or desperation, people do eventually decide that they would like to kick the habit. And once this decision is made, the next next step is working out how. There are several avenues that people can take and which are most likely to be effective.

In a statement today by Brisbane Hypnotherapist Maureen Hamilton, who sets out the four most common methods used by people to try and stop smoking and examined the effectiveness of each.

The four methods are:

• Nicotine Replacement by patches and gum
• Cold Turkey or Willpower
• Electronic cigarettes
• Hypnotherapy

Nicotine replacements by Patches & Gum

Whilst a $4 billion dollar a year industry, studies have shown patches and gum as the least effective method of stopping smoking/tobacco, with effectiveness at between 4 – 7%.

Cold Turkey or Willpower

You need a strong will to quit cold turkey, taking on the physical impact of nicotine as well as the psychological triggers and habit. Evidence says that only 10% of people will actually quit smoking permanently without any help.

Electronic Cigarettes

Whilst effective as a harm reduction therapy, electronic cigarettes substitute the psychological habit removing the harmful toxins from a person’s life yet leave the physical impact in place. Electronic cigarettes may be a healthier alternative to smoking tobacco but fall far short if the goal is to quit the habit and impact completely.

Hypnotherapy

Maureen Hamilton commented, “All the evidence suggests that for those who want to quit smoking you need to address both the physical and psychological aspects of smoking addiction. Of the main contenders in terms of options, only hypnotherapy aims to address both these needs successfully. With 1500+ successes I think I can confidently say that we have found the most successful route to quitting smoking for good.”
