“One of the reasons there is such desire to see 10 Days in a Madhouse, is that the kind of things that were witnessed and experienced by Nellie Bly in Timothy’s movie show the best and worst of what people are capable of,” laments executive producer and CEO of TriCoast, the movie’s global sales agent, Strath Hamilton, “The worst was the horrific treatment of the patients and the best was the compassion with which people ultimately responded when Nellie shared her story with the world.”

The most shameful examples of how poorly human beings can treat the most vulnerable amongst us are carefully displayed in 10 Days in a Madhouse, but it did not only happen at Blackwell’s Island Insane Asylum for women.

Timothy Hines states, “A couple of weeks ago a very sad story emerged out of Mississippi. About 7,000 mental patients from a 19th-century mental institution were buried underneath the University of Mississippi Medical Center’s campus. Sadly, this was not the exception of the treatment of the vulnerable in our world. This is exactly the kind of thing Nellie Bly was uncovering in 10 Days in a Madhouse when she feigned insanity to exposed what was going on inside Blackwell’s Island Insane Asylum for Women. Now Roosevelt Island in Manhattan’s East River. Abuses such as these are a major part of why I made the movie. At Blackwell’s they cremated thousands of unfortunate women, many of whom were sent there simply because they were impoverished.”

10 Days in a Madhouse producer Susan Goforth adds, “1,500 ‘mystery urns’ were discovered recently at the Oregaon State Hospital in Salem Oregon, where 10 Days in a Madhouse and years earlier One Flew Over the Couckoo’s Nest was filmed. Nellie Bly spent her life uncovering the terrible deeds people could do to one another. Humanity is capable of terrible atrocities against itself, but as Nellie Bly’s life is a testament to, we can also be compassionate and uplift those who are suffering.”
