THE CAJUN NAVY DEPLOYS MODERN TECHNOLOGY TO ASSIST A LOUISIANA FAMILY

The Cajun Navy came into the spotlight in the wake of Hurricane Katrina’s devastation of South Louisiana in 2005, the Great Flood of Baton Rouge in 2016, and gained national fame when they rolled into Texas after the flooding of Hurricane Harvey in 2017.  The State of Texas had bent over backward to help their neighboring State of Louisiana with shelter and supply that was so badly needed after Katrina, and a Cajun always pays his debts. The United Cajun Navy recently teamed up with a technology company called P.E.R.T (Patriot Emergency Response Team) to help a Louisiana family find closure after a loved one went missing.

Todd Terrell, Admiral of the United Cajun Navy and head of the non-profit organization bearing the same name was recently called to action when a 32-year-old woman from his hometown of Baton Rouge disappeared in Lake Pontchartrain off the coast of New Orleans.  Sadie Thibodeaux had gone boating with a friend and due to events still under investigation, ended up in the water on Sunday afternoon, August 5th. Eventually, the Coast Guard noticed the uncrewed boat and found a dog and two cell phones onboard.  On the morning of Monday, August 6th, Sadie’s companion and owner of the boat was found still alive in the water, clinging to the float of a crab trap.  The search continued all day Monday but Sadie was still missing.

Through a family connection, Terrell and his United Cajun Navy group were called to assist in the search on Tuesday, August 7th, and he sprung into action and dispatched volunteers through the P.E.R.T. system. United Cajun Navy representatives rendezvoused with the family near New Orleans and shared their plan of action, which included a mobile communication App called Zello, and specialty drones that could fly overhead and assist the search.  By using coordinates provided by the Coast Guard, drones showed Terrell wind and current patterns which led his team to within 50 yards of where they discovered a body.  After describing some identifying features over Zello, Terrell knew that they had found Sadie.  While it wasn’t the happy ending everyone had hoped for, the family at least received closure that they would be able to bring Sadie home.

The United Cajun Navy and their volunteers, using their experience and technology from P.E.R.T., did in less than 15 minutes what the New Orleans Police spent over two days attempting to do.  The P.E.R.T. system was designed by a former Coast Guard member, which is why it worked so well with Coast Guard technology.

Terrell commented to the local media, “I promised Sadie’s family that no matter what I was going to bring her home.  I just wish I could have found her sooner.”  Brian Trascher, a volunteer spokesman for the United Cajun Navy remarked, “It just shows that when skilled volunteers and local authorities work together instead of against each other, positive results can be achieved for the community.”
