Washington, DC – On Monday, May 16th, over 250 seniors packed the Savannah Center in The Villages, Florida with a single message to send to Washington, DC—Senior Lives Matter. In response to being denied a Cost-of-Living Adjustment to their Social Security benefits in 2010, 2011, and 2016, AMAC hosted a rally to bring attention to a bill the 1.3 million member organization has been pushing on Capitol Hill for over 7 months, H.R. 4140, the SENIORS Act.
“Every day, seniors are struggling to make ends meet,” said Dan Weber, the president and founder of AMAC. “Food costs, medical costs, and housing costs continue to go up, but our Social Security checks are staying the same. This one-time COLA payment would be a lifeline for our struggling seniors and veterans.” While the President finalized plans to increase federal workers’ salaries by 1.3%, millions of seniors were left to wonder why they received no increase. H.R. 4140 offers all Social Security beneficiaries a onetime payment increase equal to a 1% COLA for fiscal year 2016 (FY16). Estimated to cost anywhere between $9 and $11 billion for the Social Security increase, the SENIORS Act offers roughly $13.5 billion in offsets to more than pay for the cost of caring for our seniors.
The SENIORS Act is a smart, fiscally responsible solution to national crisis. As Josh Bernstein, TV host and national spokesman for AMAC stated, “America’s seniors and military veterans need to be taken care of. These are the best of us. They need to be treated as such. With the increased costs of groceries, prescription drugs, and health insurance premiums all going up it is unconscionable to think that the federal government can get a 1.3% pay increase and our seniors do not. These are our most vulnerable in society. Let’s pass HR 4140 and show them that Seniors Lives Matter.”
