May 3, 2018 – LEARN Charter Romano-Butler College Preparatory School is located on Chicago’s Westside. Situated in the North Lawndale Community, Romano Butler has been a staple in this community for over 25 years. There is an aim to cater the “whole child”. With this thought in mind LEARN RB started Electives Program 7 years ago.
This program allowed scholars to choose from a wide variety of classes from professionals in the areas of fashion design, mixed dance/fitness, health and fitness, Tumbling, track and field, technical dance, ballet, hip hop dance, chorus and one of their most influential classes, Drama. This drama class has many amazing artists that have gone on to do great things at the high school, college and professional levels. Being in one of the poorest zip codes in Chicago, these children needed an outlet that will give them an escape from everyday poverty, crime and violence.
The principal of LEARN Romano Butler, Ms. Robin Johnson says “Our scholars deserve the best educational experiences and also the best cultural experiences. We strive to obtain the best talent in all of those areas that will pour into our scholars here at Romano Butler” LEARN Romano Butler is named after Mrs. Margaret Romano, an Educator and philanthropist that has been a part of LEARN since its inception and Cecil Butler, also an education advocate and staple in the North Lawndale community.
The Drama Elective has done just that. Instructors/Directors Dawn Bless and Toi Overton have made a huge impact on these children’s lives over the last 7 years. They have had runs of Annie, The Wiz, Seussical, Motown Revue, Alice In Wonderland, Lion King and this year they focus on Madagascar Jr.
This year they are doing a run of Madagascar Jr. the Musical It runs Thursday, May 10th and Friday, May 11th with 2 shows each day. 1pm and 6pm.
