TEDxKids@ElCajon event showcases what students are passionate about

Ideas and passions were shown at the TEDxKids@ElCajon event with a variety of talks from youth.

For the past four years, Cajon Valley Union School District has hosted an annual TEDxKids@ElCajon event, giving an arena for students to present topics that they are passionate about. The event is an offshoot of the TED organization that aims to give a voice to people wishing to spread their ideas. This year, the event attracted nearly 5,000 people and was featured on several local news stations and papers.

The day was broken up into four sessions with the topics based around the themes “Beyond Me,” “Beyond Today,” Beyond Barriers,” and “Beyond Classroom.” The topics featured on stage by students showcased not only their ideas, but their hearts as well, and included changing picky eating habits, helping homeless animals, the consequences for telling lies, and bringing back the code of chivalry.

One student, Naranca Elementary School fifth-grader Serene Williams (featured on 10News https://www.10news.com/news/tedx-igniting-confidence-in-el-cajon-students), spoke about her struggles as a fourth-grader and being bullied for her looks. Serene was very brave in sharing her message with a packed auditorium. She shed light on the negativity bullying had in her life, but also gave a message of hope by sharing how a school counselor encouraged her to join a leadership club. At that club, Serene found strength, confidence, and a batch of great new friends!

Besides students, guest speakers also shared messages on the TEDxKids@ElCajon stage, including El Cajon Police Det. Louie Michael. Det. Michael shared the story of how he started off as a young boy, fleeing from Iraq, to a graduating high school and then the police academy. He wanted to thank the mentors he had growing up and show the audience that he has lived through many things some of them may be currently struggling with.

After practicing and receiving coaching throughout the year, the students involved in the TEDxKids@ElCajon event have gained life skills that are vital to taking their confidence to greater heights. TEDxKids@ElCajon is an independently organized and licensed TED event hosted by the Cajon Valley Union School District. It is run by volunteers, and the event’s purpose is to give the youth of the Cajon Valley area a stage in which to share their passions, voice their ideas, and gain first-hand experience in how their voice matters in the world.
