London, UK – April 11, 2017 – Today, Sicklekan, a non-profit organisation for the care and support of sickle cell patients in partnership with the sickle cell society, requests donations of toys and other children materials from the public to cheer and support children managing the condition in the sickle cell wards in Lewisham and Kings College hospital in London. This toy initiative is part of Sicklekan goal to spread awareness of the disease through various avenues.

According to Mr Kehinde Salami, the Founder and Director of SickleKan, “We believe that by making people aware and giving them the correct tools to aid themselves or others in need of assistance, this would mean a decrease in the amount of Sickle cell patients feeling neglected and improperly cared for. With the right funding and support we can reach and provide information and support to members of the community, schools, business and other organisations. We can try and address the grey areas surrounding Sickle cell and implementing measures to rectify this.”

The sickle cell disease, regarded as the world’s largest genetic blood disorder is suffered by about 15,000 people in the UK and about 3 quarter of that amount, mostly children, resides in London. Mr Salami and some other members of the SickleKan organisation who are also sickle cell patients understand first-hand the lethal nature of this disease and the difficulty in managing it. Hence, they are determined to raise its awareness.

In a bid to promote the awareness of Sickle Cell from the ‘Patients’ perspective, SckleKan is asking the masses to donate soft toys, teddies, books in new or newish condition etc. for children impacted with sickle cell disease.

About SickleKan

SickleKan is a non-profit organisation reliant on the support and donations of the public to help achieve its goal of supporting sickle cell patients and helping them improve their quality of life. Founded in 2016 by a sickle cell carrier, Mr Kehinde Salami who is also a father of a sickle cell patient, the organisation was borne out of the trauma he experienced to help those in similar condition at a time when sickle cell patients suffer much neglect and the ailment, less awareness.
