Selfies: The Facts on a Strong Force in the Beauty Industry

Since 2013 when the word ‘selfie’ was added to the dictionary, the craze has taken over the world. And everyone’s doing it: from celebrities like Kim Kardashian to grandmothers everywhere. Samsung estimated last year that the average person will take just about 25,000 selfies in a lifetime, while a Georgia Institute of Technology survey strongly points out that just over those (52%) are about appearance. But this comes as no shock, it’s obvious just by scrolling on anyone’s social media newsfeed or dating app. In times where a selfie can make a real difference in someone’s life, looking breath-taking is essential. Certainly, it’s not all about the looks but everyone can agree that being as pretty as in pictures and feeling just as good would be the ideal scenario.

Selfies also play a huge role in aesthetics, according to the American Academy of Facial Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery’s annual survey from 2018. Findings reveal that in 2017 up to 55% of facial plastic surgeons treated patients whose goal was to look better in selfies. And this increased by 13% since 2016. Selfies have a high impact on how we perceive ourselves, just as much as when taking one as off the camera.

Nevertheless, looking good and feeling good remain at the top of the agenda. It’s not so much about the age right now as it is about being empowered and focused on health, vitality and physical shape. Predictably, dermal fillers are in the top as being the most popular minimally invasive solution for both men and women.

Dermal fillers are injections used to address wrinkles, creases in the skin or to increase the volume and definition of the lips and cheeks. A groundbreaking survey by The Harris Poll published in 2018involving 9 million patients who have had dermal filler underlines the main frustration of consumers: the maintenance process.  What this means exactly is that almost 60% of people report being annoyed with the hassle of having to schedule doctor appointments and as many as two in every three say their filler stop lasting as long as they used to. A finding that shows the need for more awareness around permanent dermal fillers which are very much available with specific ones even showing results from day one.

Also important to note is that 9 in 10 consumers say they are interested in an FDA approved filler. Safety and trust always come first and it should always be this way. Just as no one would trust an unproven brand of drug, risking irreparable facial damage is just not worth it. By far the main reason for not getting dermal fillers cited was the cost of ongoing maintenance with as many as 56% considering it a strain on their pockets and overall comfort. But it doesn’t have to be this strenuous and difficult to achieve desired results. More and more brands offer one-time solutions that can be easily accessed and applied.
