New Delhi: Rotary District 3012 organised their two-day annual District Conference 2017 on the theme ‘Lead to Serve’ on 7th and 8th January 2017 at Hotel Taj Palace, New Delhi. The two conferences saw participation of delegates and distinguished speakers including Mr. Sharat Jain, District Governor, Rotary District 3012, Sh. Manish Tewari of the Indian National Congress, and Dr. Sambhit Patra, spokesperson, Bhartiya Janta Party.

The first day of the conference included some socially productive projects for a section of underprivileged persons. The day saw the project showcasing of the free cochlear implants for 30 underprivileged and also introduction of few beneficiary children and their families, Rotary Project for free dialysis which has benefited more than 4000 people and services such as Wash in Schools (WinS). Later the audiences were enthralled with the live performance of Bollywood singer Khushboo Grewal.  

District Governor Sharat Jain, the convener of the two day conference, addressed the issue of disability among children. He highlighted how disabled children suffer just because of the lack of funds. In his address he said, “Abhi Pandey, one of the four children who received this treatment is just five year old and wasn’t deaf and dumb since birth, if children exceed this age limit they can learn to hear but they can’t speak.” 

Wash in Schools (WinS) initiative, a part of the Swacch Bharat Mission of India, aims to improve the hygiene conditions in more than 8000 rural schools in India that have poor sanitation standards. Adequate and well maintained facilities with running water are a key requirement to ensure the dignity, safety and privacy of girl students. The initiative prompted students to wash their hands and inculcate the habit regularly washing their hands before and after meals. 

Rotary club has also identified the need for dialysis for over 15 lakh kidney failure patients in the country. As per estimates, only 22% patients can get any kind of treatment as such facilities are available only in the metros and tier I cities. Identifying this lacuna, Rotary club has started Amma Dialysis Centers. These centers provide free of cost dialysis to the patients in remote areas and service to those who suffer due to the lack of funds.

The second day of the conference witnessed four different discussion sessions between eminent speakers. Day two of the conference had in all four sessions on the topic: Focusing on digital future, doing good in the world, Gender equality – Myth and Reality and Demonetization – the social impact.

The sessions highlighted some of the core problems and challenges within the society and dealt with finding solutions to these problems. While opening session was addressed by chief guest RI Director Elect. C Basker, the follow up sessions saw participation by Dr. Vinnie Jauhari, Director Education Advocacy, Microsoft India, Sunil Dutt, President LYF, Reliance Jio Infocomm Ltd, Anshu Gupta, Founder of Goonj, Didi Maa Sadhvi Rithambara ji, IVF specialist, Dr Rita Bakshi, RTI activist, Subhash Chandra, Advocate Ramakant Gaur, Prashant Bhushan of Swaraj Abhiyan, Manish Tiwari of Indian National Congress, Dr. Sambit Patra, spokesperson, Bhartiya Janta Party, Ranjana Kumari, Director of Centre for Social Research, Ritu Marya, Editor-in-chief (India region) of Entrepreneur Media and Reynu Taandon, Fashion Designer. The concluding remarks were given by DGN Subhash Jain and DG Sharat Jain. The two day program ended with a lucky draw.
