“A ROSE IN WINTER // ROCK SALT RELEASING”

Los Angeles, CA – May 12, 2018 –

ROCK SALT RELEASING – Edith Stein: a champion of feminism, A Carmelite nun, A German Jew, A canonized saint – ‘A ROSE IN WINTER’.

CANNES ANNOUNCEMENT: ROCK SALT RELEASING will represent Writer-Director Joshua Sinclair’s (‘Jump’, ‘Judgment in Berlin’, ‘Shake Zulu’) biopic love story, ‘A ROSE IN WINTER’ at this year’s Cannes Marché Du Film, exclusively for buyers on Sunday, May 13th at Palais K at 6:00 P.M. by invitation only.

‘A ROSE IN WINTER’ exquisitely explores the truth behind Edith Stein’s life as one of the most compelling women in Judeo-Christian history, as the first and only Jewish patron saint of Europe and as a fearless advocate for women’s rights. Unwilling to flee from Hitler’s death machine, Edith Stein chooses the path of remaining united with “her people” by staying in Germany, where her path leads to becoming a Carmelite nun who courageously challenges the Nazi regime, leading to her martyrdom in Auschwitz.

Edith’s life has never been put into film in a better way and this film also has a powerful evangelization potential.” – The Cardinal’s Office, Cardinal Schönborn, the Archbishop of Vienna and Austria.

Sinclair’s passion project creates a “who’s-who” of cinema powerhouses, including three-time Oscar award-winning cinematographer and master of light, Vittorio Storaro (‘Last Tango in Paris’, ‘Apocalypse Now’, ‘Reds’, ‘The Last Emperor’), iconic Italian editor Roberto Perpignani (‘Il Postino’, ‘Ceaser Must Die’, ‘Last Tango In Paris’) and internationally celebrated composer Franco Piersanti (‘The Caiman’, ‘Terraferma’, ‘Me and You’, ‘We Have a Pope’).

Sinclair leads a carefully curated cast with a combination of talented newcomers and silver-screen legends, including Zana Marjanovic, as the lead of the iconic Edith Stein, who came as a referral by Angelina Jolie, who worked with Marjanovic in ‘In The Land of Blood and Honey’. Alongside is Christian Cooke, who stars as Michael Praeger, the New York Times journalist. Cooke is currently appearing in the popular and critically acclaimed BBC series: Ordeal By Innocence. Rounding out the cast of ‘A ROSE IN WINTER’ is Franco Nero — famously known for originating the iconic character Django — who brings gravitas and over 50 years experience to the role of Rainer Praeger.

Edith ‘died a Jew, but also a Christian. For her, the two were one and could not be separated,” says Sinclair. This exploration of a Judeo-Christian relationship is the foundation on which that ‘A ROSE IN WINTER’ is built. Indeed, in WWII, while so many harbored hatred based on each other’s differences, Edith’s actions proved that our differences are our strengths. Her story highlights the interdependence of different religions, as well as the necessity of having interfaith dialogues, making Edith Stein more relevant today than ever. “I feel compelled to make sure we all know more about her [Stein] and what she stood for.” — Entertainment Weekly.

‘ROSE IN WINTER’ shows Stein’s progression into a feminist leader, as her story is saturated with female empowerment. Raising the family alone by her single mother, her mother’s example of strength became the basis upon which Edith structured her lecture tours, educating young women on the importance of turning adversity into opportunity, and using it as a way to excel in life. Stein writes that every woman can live a fulfilled life, whether it is “in a marriage, in a religious order, or in a worldly profession.” And this is exactly what Sinclair wants the audience to take away from ‘A ROSE IN WINTER’ – “For everyone — young and old — whatever you do, whoever you wish to be, make sure it fulfills you.”

Sinclair fondly says that Edith’s motto would be, “Where is my voice needed? Where must my voice be heard?” Stein’s voice has echoed through history’s time and continues to resonate with each of us, inspired individually and together by her strength and advocacy.

‘A ROSE IN WINTER’ will be screening at Cannes on Sunday, May 13th at Palais K at 6:00 P.M. by invitation only. ROCK SALT RELEASING’s booth at Cannes will be located at Riviera D3, alongside TriCoast Worldwide from May 8th – 19th, 2018.
