Real Supply Chain Value is Driven by Understanding Data Context According to Synchrono

Today’s supply chains are producing an unprecedented amount of data. While the digitization of manufacturing is facilitating the ability to access, aggregate, analyze and share real-time data, understanding the context of the data is critical in providing true supply chain value, according to John Maher, Vice President of Product Strategy for Synchrono, a well-respected supply chain thought leader and Supply & Demand Chain Executive Pros to Know. Maher explained Modern Demand-Driven Manufacturers are searching for ways to make sense of all their data from different environments – within individual plants, across an enterprise of multiple plants, and throughout the extended supply chain.

The context – all the factors and conditions contributing to an event – is essential to determining the true cause of problems, making more informed decisions and, in the end, Leaner results. For example, a machine goes down on the plant floor. Determining if it is a part that needs replacing – or deducing that the machine’s tolerance was impacted by a failure in the environmental management system – are results requiring very different actions. In this case, quickly determining the root cause through contextual data results in significant downtime savings.

In a recent survey, The Clear Peak Supply Chain Advisory Council explored significant challenges to make supply chain management (SCM) a strategic asset. Maher noted that the survey results really go to the heart of valuing contextual data. According to the survey, data management and governance are often at the core of the problem. Few companies have access to quality data across all their operations, lacking a “single source of truth.” Technology and organizational silos still lead to incomplete or inaccurate views of supply chain data. Lack of strategic planning and budgetary support hinders many companies from realizing the benefits that next-generation supply chain technologies could provide.

The Clear Peak Supply Chain Advisory Council is a group of practitioners from industry and academia who encourage the advancement and deployment of a more connected supply chain through management action, technology, and analytics.
