PTU Nalanda presents 12th North-West QualTech Awards

PTU Nalanda School of TQM & Entrepreneeurship organised its 12th annual NorthWest QualTech Convention and Awards function at Chandigarh to celebrate excellence in quality.

The North West QualTech Convention and Awards is a pioneering effort by the PTU Nalanda which is spearheading the quality movement in the country, encouraging manufacturing as well as the services sector to adopt total quality management practices.

19 companies save Rs. 11 crore through quality management

Technology must be used judiciously for larger social benefit, said Rama Shankar Pandey, Managing Director, Hella India Lighting Limited here today, addressing the industry participants at the PTU Nalanda’s 12th NorthWest QualTech Convention.

Sharing the case study in his keynote address, Rama Shankar Pandey of Hella which is much-awarded company known for its innovative lighting for the automotive industry, said that there had been total turnaround in the corporate culture the moment the entire focus of the company shifted to designing and developing head lamps for commercial vehicle that could reduce glare and save lives being lost in road accidents.

Every product manufactured has a human dimension and is produced to satisfy a human need, which is now being taken care of by digital technology, with the mushrooming apps from cradle to cremation, he said, and henceforth, quality becomes a concern for everyone engaged in the production process.

R.P. Sehgal former Director Works for SML Isuzu, however, pointed out that though complete industrial automation in western countries zero-defect products have become a reality whereas in highly competitive and human-driven manufacturing setup in India requires much more effort to develop a culture of total quality management.

The day-long convention and awards was organized by PTU Nalanda School of TQM & Entrepreneurship, which saw the participation of 32 teams from 19 large, medium and service companies for the NorthWest Qualtech Awards.

Manish Trehan, CEO of PTU Nalanda informed that the 19 participating companies have been able to save over Rs.11 crore within a year, which would be a recurring benefit to them, through structured implementation of various Total Quality Management (TQM) practices.

An expert panel of jury members watched the project presentations for large, medium, and small manufacturing units as well as those of the service sector.

Later in the day, the thought leaders of quality management discussed the advantages of “Leveraging Quality and Innovation to Delight Customers”.

Panelists included the ASQ South Asia’s Director for Business Development Anindya Sarangi, Ramneek Jain, CEO of Max Speciality Films Ltd, Dr P.J. Singh, Managing Director of Tynor Orthotics, and Vijay Kapoor, Principal Consultant with PTU Nalanda.

The awards were presented by Dr NP Singh, Dean (Planning & External Programs) Inder Kumar Gujral Punjab Technical University, who lauded PTU Nalanda’s efforts in developing an ecosystem that promotes quality in the region, as well as rewarding the commendable breakthrough that the organizations have been able to achieve through quality improvement.

Others who spoke on the occasion included Founding Chairman of the School’s Governing Council Padma Shri Chandra Mohan, and Dr. R.S.Khandpur, former Director General, Pushpa Gujral Science City, urged the participating teams to set stretch goals year-after-year in order to march ahead on the road to global competitiveness.
