Dr. Colon-Rivera studied medicine at Ponce School of Medicine and Health Science in Puerto Rico after he graduated from University of Puerto Rico with a Bachelor degree in Biology and Economy. He has contributed to numerous publications in peer-reviewed journals, has given over twenty poster presentations at the regional and national levels, and is an active member of the American Society of Addiction Medicine, American Academy of Addiction Psychiatry, American Psychiatric Association, Massachusetts Psychiatric Society, and the American Society for Clinical Pharmacology and Therapeutics.

Dr. Colon-Rivera attributes his success to being self-motivated and proactive. In his free time, he enjoys traveling, business, and performance cars.
