Parents as Tutors to Participate in National Conferences

Parents as Tutors, LLC invites parents engagement specialists and educators to two upcoming conferences, as they share the mission of building parent capacity to partner with teachers in increasing students’ reading proficiency.

Parents as Tutors provides parents with the knowledge, skills and resources necessary to engage in student learning. This is done through parental reading workshops, a series of books and various other resources designed to help parents understand reading components and instructional strategies for helping children increase their reading level.

“We are delighted to participate in these conferences to empower both parent engagement specialists and educators, as they collaborate with parents to take an active role in children’s reading education,” said Dr. Andrea Thompson, Parents as Tutors Chief Executive Officer.

The first conference will be held in St. Louis at the Parents as Teachers Conference where Parents as Tutors will present a hands-on workshop titled “Kindergarten Readiness: From Learning to Read, to Reading to Learn” on Tuesday, Oct. 18 from 10:30-11:30 a.m.

The conference will be held at the historic Union Station Hotel from Oct. 17-19, 2016. Online conference registration is now open with options including a full conference pass, day passes and a keynote speaker pass.

According to the Parents as Teachers website, the focus of this year’s conference is “strengthening the programs through knowledge and leaving a positive legacy for tomorrow.”

Toward the end of the month, Parents as Tutors will be exhibitors at the National Conference on Afterschool and Summer Learning co-hosted by the National Summer Learning Association and School’s Out Washington Oct. 25-26 in Seattle, Wash.

Titled “Dare to Disrupt! The Pathway to Excellence and Equity in Education,” the conference will explore partnerships, policies and program with non-traditional ideas on when and where learning occurs.

Attendance options include a pre-conference training held on Oct. 24 and 1-or 2-Day conference registration for Oct. 25 and 26. Information and online registration is available at www.summerlearning.org/national-conference/

Parents as Tutors finds that although many parents are involved and willing to be engaged, they lack the knowledge necessary to help struggling readers. They offer training and support for parents whose children are speakers of a second language, those who are unable to fund tutoring services, others who desire to prepare their children for Kindergarten readiness, and parents who need the skills to ensure that their children will be able to pass reading standardized tests.

By attending these conferences, Parents as Tutors aims to reach more parents in order to provide them with a sense of hope and specific guidance.
