Leona Lewis to Leave the Cast of Cats

Leona Lewis, a British pop singer who won X-Factor, has been playing the role of Grizabella in the Broadway revival of Cats. She recently announced that she will be leaving next month. Her last performance will be on October 9. A replacement has not yet been announced.

History of Cats in London and New York

Cats was composed by Andrew Lloyd Webber and is based on T.S. Eliot’s Old Possum’s Book of Practical Cats. The musical tells the story of the Jellicles, a tribe of cats. They must make a decision on which of them should ascend to the Heaviside Layer. The one who is chosen will be reborn.

Cats opened in London’s West End in 1981 and then opened on Broadway with the same creative team. The London production of Cats ran for a record-setting 21 years. The original Broadway production opened at the Winter Garden Theatre in 1982. It set a record, running for 18 years and 7,485 performances. As of this year, Cats is the fourth longest-running show on Broadway. Cats won a Laurence Olivier Award for Best Musical and six Tony Awards, including Best Musical, Best Book, and Best Original Score.

Current Cast and Creative Team

The revival of Cats opened on July 31 at Broadway’s Neil Simon Theatre. The principal company in the current production is led by Quentin Earl Darrington, who plays Old Deuteronomy; Eloise Kropp in the roles of Jennyanydots and Gumbie; Ricky Ubeda as Mr. Mistoffelees; and Tyler Hanes in the role of Rum Tum Tugger. Trevor Nunn, who directed the original West End and Broadway productions, is also directing the current revival.

The production is choreographed by Andy Blankenbuehler, who worked on Hamilton, based on the choreography for the original production that was done by Gillian Lynne. Lynne currently serves as associate director. Mick Potter provides sound design, Natasha Katz does lighting design, and John Napier is responsible for scenic and costume design.
