The play tells the story of the Puritan town of Salem, Massachusetts, the site of the historic witch trials that turned neighbor against neighbor in the 1690s. Townspeople accused each other of witchcraft and in some cases tried to have their enemies condemned for unrelated reasons. The story was a parable for the McCarthy hearings that were being conducted at the time the play was written in the 1950s.
The production of The Crucible features an original score by composer Philip Glass. The cast currently includes Ben Whishaw as John Proctor, Tony Award winner Sophie Okonedo as Elizabeth Proctor, Saoirse Ronan as Abigail Williams, Tina Benko as Ann Putnam and Sarah Goode, and Teagle Bougere as Judge Hawthorne. The play is directed by Ivo van Hove.
