Olympic Champion, Mother and Motivational Speaker Dominique Dawes Honored by Archdiocese of New York

Dawes received the Pierre Toussaint Medallion for her determined leadership, commitment to faith, and service to others as a role model for women and young girls all over the world.

Dominique Dawes, Olympic Gold Medalist and co-chair of the President’s Council on Fitness, Sports & Nutrition, was honored at The Pierre Toussaint Scholarship Fund Awards Dinner organized by the Archdiocese of New York, Office of Black Ministry on Monday, November 7, 2016 at the New York Athletic Club. His Eminence Timothy Michael Cardinal Dolan presided over the awards ceremony that honored Dawes for her athletic achievements and formidable impact she has in her community and for women, moms and young adolescents around the country.

The Pierre Toussaint Scholarship Fund provides scholarship support and mentorships for college student leaders of different cultural and ethnic backgrounds. Each year, the organization honors special individuals who truly embody their mission statement of positive leadership and extraordinary efforts in support of life, human rights, social justice, spiritual values and quality education for all.

“Mrs. Dawes was selected as an honoree because of her extraordinary achievements and commitment to excellence in life, athletics and artistry — on the world stage,” said Archdiocese of New York Manager of Special Events Melecia Ming. “Also her particular commitment to encouraging and inspiring young people to strive for excellence and to develop themselves and their bodies to the fullest extent of their potential.”

Dominique made history as a member of the famed 1996 U.S. Women’s Gymnastics Team dubbed the “Magnificent Seven” that saw Dawes become the first African-American ever to win an Olympic Gold Medal and individual medal in gymnastics at the Olympics. Since retiring from gymnastics, Dawes has dedicated her life to helping others develop goals for a successful, healthier lifestyle with a specific focus on the next generation of youth in America.

“I’m truly honored and humbled to be this year’s recipient of the Pierre Toussaint award. This award, allows me to remind others and even myself that God is bigger than one person, & that it takes a village to accomplish the common goal — that by our good works and earnest faith, striving for Heaven is our ultimate destiny,” said Dawes.

Dominique continues to use her platform and influential voice as an engaging, inspiring and impactful motivational speaker for corporate conferences, leadership summits, university speaker series and faith-based organizations.
