Old School Films is a group that has a mission: maintaining an on-line archive of classic school films from mid- to late- 20th century. Old School Films will make this archive available 24 hours a day, and both free and subscription services will be available. Now, the creator has launched a Kickstarter campaign to fund the creation and management of this online database.
According to Old School Films, “From 1940 through 1980, schools would use media to bring the world to students. Everything from science to world countries, and language to healthcare were being produced on 16 mm motion picture film by the thousands. When the videotape recorder became widely used in the late 70s, these films were destroyed or abandoned and just ended up in the landfill. As a forty-year film collector, I have held on to approximately 1200 of these films in my collection, and would like to share them with the world before the film deteriorates beyond use.”
OSF is designed to be a self-sustaining repository and inventory system for vintage educational films. The online database will be available on an unlimited basis to subscribers who wish to pay for service. There will also be a free component for public use. The goal is to make these vintage educational films available to the public for a low cost so that today’s children can enjoy and learn from them as well and adults can experience the nostalgia of reviewing their favorite childhood educational films.
As seen at https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/74034250/old-school-films-an-on-line-archive, Old School Films is offering pledge levels as part of the Kickstarter campaign ranging from $1 to $500 with rewards ranging from free viewing codes to paid subscriptions.
