NEW APP MAKES LEARNING TO READ FAST AND FUN

Racing to Read App for iPad by Reading Expressway Debuts on the App Store

North Augusta, SC – May 29, 2018 – Is there anything more fun than reading?  Two reading specialists from Georgia and South Carolina don’t think so.  They have combined their six decades worth of experience teaching reading and writing to children who are just learning or who are struggling, as well as training teachers and school principals in effective strategies.  The result?  A fun, interactive reading game that leads children ages 3-7 incrementally through multiple word families, giving them direct experience with letters, sounds, and words to help build the skills crucial to learning to read.

“Children will learn beginning sounds and how to blend them to form words. The activities in the Racing to Read app will then give them the needed practice to read these words in simple sentences and story rhymes,” says Patsy Capps, Ed. D., one of the content creators.

Within each of eight levels, a new graphic landscape is ready to be explored, inhabited by colorful animals and vehicles, that motivate and entertain.  Built-in reinforcement ensures that players are rewarded every step of the way on their reading journey.

“We wanted to present our method of instruction in an environment that would be appealing to children and their parents,” Marcia Delany, Ph. D. states about the original artwork.  “That way, we can hold their attention and make learning fun at the same time.”

One thing that stands out about the app, is its developer, Montana Burr, who has high-functioning autism and who has been developing apps since his teens.

“This is the second app I have had in the App Store.  The first one was a recipe app that I developed when I was 16.  With Racing to Read, though, I have been able to use more gamification elements, which have helped me to grow my skills as a programmer,” says Montana.

What is in store for the future?  Marcia and Patsy say they are planning to expand into the app marketplace with more advanced versions.  In the meantime, Racing to Read is sure to be a hit with children who are learning to read.

Reading Expressway is a resource for parents and teachers looking for effective strategies and materials to improve reading and writing.
