MONSPACE founder and CEO Dato’ Sri Jessy Lai has won the 2017 Global Chinese New Year’s Gala Role Model Award. Monspace sent CEO of Sofo in Lai’s place to receive the award at the “Same Roots, Same Dream” Global Chinese New Year Celebration Gala held in Beijing, China on 29 and 31 January 2018.
“In recent years, I have been frequently invited to special events in China, such as the Chinese New Year Gala by Phoenix TV last year. I was also invited many times as recipient of special awards,” said Lai. Despite being unable to attend the ceremony, she is grateful for the recognition given by China.
“China is one of the most important business partners of MONSPACE. We have great faith in the Chinese market, and hope to improve our collaboration through business and cultural exchanges.”
China and Malaysia established a Joint Economic and Trade Commission in 1988, and a Bilateral Business Council in 2002. Later, the two nations signed more than 10 economic partnership agreements, bringing our trade relations closer than ever before.
Statistics show that China has been Malaysia’s biggest business partner for 8 years, while Malaysia is China’s biggest partner in ASEAN. It is clear that these two countries matter a lot to each other in terms of trade.
With China’s new Silk and Road initiative that pushes for infrastructure developments, the roads are cleared even further for Chinese investments in Malaysia.
Just last year, China has replaced America and Japan to become Malaysia’s second biggest foreign trade partner.
According to China’s biggest independent think tank Anbound, Malaysia is one of China’s emphasis in foreign trade, and also a great participant of China’s 21 Century Silk Road initiative.
Beside business collaborations, China and Malaysia also share intimate cultural relations.
In recent years, China has stepped up their effort to promote Chinese culture and unite ethnic Chinese around the world. Many cultural festivities were held to celebrate the achievements of the Chinese diaspora around the world, and as one of the countries most closely tied to China culturally, Malaysia has been frequently invited to these events.
In these roles, Lai fulfilled her responsibilities as a Malaysian entrepreneur to build closer relationships between China and Malaysia; creating more partnership opportunities and opening up a bigger market for local businesses.
“MONSPACE and China have close partnerships in the digital economy, e-commerce, imports, and exports. In future, we hope to further strengthen the trade ties between two countries,” Said Lai.
“On behalf of Dato’ Sri Jessy Lai, I want to thank the Global Chinese New Year Celebration Gala for the award and recognition. Dato Sri’ promises to continue playing her role as a Chinese entrepreneur to facilitate business and cultural exchanges between China and Malaysia” said CEO of Sofo.
Besides the Chinese New Year gala, other conferences and networking sessions were also held to facilitate economic and cultural exchanges among the global ethnic Chinese.
Other VIPs present at the event were Chinese government officials from departments such commerce, infrastructure, development and reform commission, and more.
Besides Lai, other Malaysian recipients of the 2017 Global Chinese New Year’s Gala Role Model Award include our former transportation minister and MCA chairperson Tan Sri Ong Tee Keat, and former deputy finance minister Dato Donald Lim.
The gala was designed by CCTV’s professional director, and incorporated the world’s most cutting-edge designs in choreography, sound, acrobatics, magic, comedy, drama and more for a gala that combines art, economic ties and cultural exchange in one magnificent night.
