Mitt Romney, Rick Perry, Marco Rubio Healthcare Policy Advisor Shares Solutions To Fix Healthcare System

Avik Roy Says Government Could Spend Less Money to Cover More People and Provide Better Coverage

Scottsdale, AZ – Leading health and wellness podcast The Longevity Show and host Jason Hartman interviewed Forbes’ acclaimed and influential Opinion Editor of the The Apothecary blog on healthcare and entitlement reform, Avik Roy.

The healthcare debate has been raging since the creation of Medicare and Medicaid by President Lyndon B. Johnson in the 60’s. Access to healthcare continues to be limited, and costs are ever-rising. Hartman and Roy cite signs of no improvement in quality or access to care as a reason why the Affordable Care Act (ACA) is failing.

“The U.S. government was spending more on healthcare than almost any other country in the world prior to the passage of the Affordable Care Act,” Roy said. “It was the third highest in the world. Now, spending has gone up, so it’ll go up in the rankings and be 1 or 2.”

So what’s the solution to put an end to the never-ending debate? Roy suggests more competition among doctors, hospitals, pharmaceutical, medical device companies and insurers to compete for business so patients have real choices.

“The government spends more than $1.5 trillion a year subsidizing healthcare,” Roy said. “If we actually restructured the healthcare entitlement system in a way to truly provide a safety-net to people who need the help and let everyone else participate in a freer market than we have today, then we can actually spend less.”

Roy has also served as senior healthcare policy advisor to Senator Marco Rubio (R-FL), Governor Rick Perry (R-TX) and Governor Mitt Romney (R-MA) during his 2012 Presidential bid. Roy is the author of, “TRANSCENDING OBAMACARE: A Patient-Centered Plan For Near-Universal Coverage And Permanent Fiscal Solvency”, “HOW MEDICAID FAILS THE POOR,” AND, “THE CASE AGAINST OBAMACARE.”
