Manhattan Center for Vaginal Surgery: Encourage conversations, enrich lives

We recently spoke to Manhattan Center for Vaginal Surgery’s (MCVS) Medical Director and Vaginal Surgeon, Dr. Ronald Blatt M.D., FACOG, to gain insight into the growing number of requests for cosmetic genital surgeries among women and how these surgeries encourage discussion about topics once considered taboo.

MCVS, a Certified Quad-A surgical facility conveniently located in Midtown Manhattan, specializes in vaginal reconstructive surgeries such as vaginal rejuvenation, hymenoplasty, labiaplasty, vaginoplasty, and clitoral hood reduction. Here Dr. Blatt, a board certified gynecologist and fellow of the American College of OBGYN for over 20 years, discusses the MCVS approach and the valuable impact these surgeries are having on women’s lives.

Q: In your opinion, why do you think cosmetic genital surgeries have risen in popularity over the years?

Over the last decade women have become more comfortable and open with regards to their own sexuality and intimate concerns. Subjects which were taboo are now discussed openly. Women are more in touch with their own bodies and issues that concern them. This has resulted in more discussions of issues related to their genitalia. Women today now have the option of correcting the problem, not just living with it. These procedures are low risk and are widely accepted.

Q: Talk about some of the reasons why a woman may want vaginal rejuvenation, labiaplasty, hymenoplasty, or clitoral hood reduction.

Vaginoplasty is a surgical tightening of the vagina (inside and outside). Most women desire this surgery after having one or more vaginal deliveries which result in vaginal laxity. This causes the woman to feel less during intercourse resulting in less sexual satisfaction. Her partner may also note less sensation. The goal of a vaginoplasty is to return the patient to a tightness that she possessed before she had children thus increasing sexual satisfaction for her and her partner. It is important to note than a number of our patients request this surgery even though they are childless. A physical exam would determine if the patient could benefit from this procedure.

Labiaplasty is a surgical procedure that reduces the size of the labia minora and/or labia majora. This surgery is performed because the patient complains of cosmetic issues or because the increased labial size causes problems with pain or irritation with clothing, exercise or intercourse.

A vaginal rejuvenation is a surgery that consists of vaginal tightening (vaginoplasty) and labial reduction (labiaplasty). The reasons these surgeries are requested are noted above. Many women request a vaginal rejuvenation when they are on the dating scene after a divorce. This procedure will increase sexual satisfaction with a partner and help the woman regain youthful confidence.

Hynenoplasty is a surgical procedure where the hymen is reapproximated and the opening of the vagina is tightened. This surgery is usually performed for religious reasons.

Clitoral hood reduction is a surgical procedure to reduce the size of the clitoral hood. For many women the clitoral hood is large and covers the clitoris resulting in less stimulation and decreased sexual satisfaction. A clitoral hood reduction results in a smaller hood and a more exposed clitoris.

Q: Why should women pick Manhattan Center for Vaginal Surgery for their genital cosmetic surgery needs?

There should be many considerations. At the Manhattan Center for Vaginal Surgery, I am the operating surgeon and have been in private practice for 30 years. Eleven years ago I started the MCVS to satisfy the growing need for cosmetic genital surgery, making me one of the first physicians to specialize in this expanding area of medicine. I am one of the few cosmetic genital surgeons with extensive surgical experience. It should be noted that many patients come to us to repair other surgeons’ work when the patient is unhappy with their result. The surgical facility is also of prime importance. MCVS is a Certified Quad-A Facility meaning that it has to pass rigorous inspections to insure its quality and safety. We employ board certified anesthesiologists every day. Our website has a section with before and after photos of our work. We encourage our prospective patients to review these photographs. We are very patient and friendly with a warm and welcoming attitude. Many of our patients are very nervous at the beginning and we do our best to put them at ease. This has contributed to our success.

Q: Walk me through what a typical consultation for a service would entail.

During the initial consultation a thorough medical history is reviewed. I then ask about the main problem concerning the visit. The patient’s complaints are reviewed in detail. Questions are asked concerning what the patient would like as the result of her surgery. Next, using anatomical charts, a detailed explanation of the proposed surgery is reviewed with the patient. We then go through a physical examination, that allows the patient to go through the before and after look of their genitalia. All questions are encouraged and answered.

Q: Do surgeries offered at MCVS have long recovery times?

Most surgeries have full healing at six to eight weeks post op. This is because the sutures we use dissolve. They take six to eight weeks to fully dissolve.

Q: How soon can women return to work, have sexual relations, perform household duties, exercise, etc?

Most patients return to work in three or four days. Sexual relations should wait for six to eight weeks. Exercise is permitted as long as it does not put too much stress on the stitches. Vaginoplasty patients should refrain from heavy lifting for at least six weeks and normal household duties may resume within four to six days.

Q: Are results from these procedures long lasting?

Labiaplasty can be done at any time and childbirth will not affect the surgical results. The vaginoplasty surgery will tighten the vagina. If the patient has another vaginal delivery, the tissues will stretch again so the vaginoplasty operation should be done after all vaginal childbirths. However, a vaginoplasty can be performed if the patient elects to have future children by cesarean section.

Q: Reality shows like “Dr. 90210,” and “Botched” have routinely showcased vaginal surgeries. Have these shows affected or impacted your practice at all? (Brought more awareness to this kind of business?)

Not directly but the more exposure these surgeries get in the general population the more interest and consultations we get. However, it’s important to note, we don’t do this for television. We’re a low-risk, high reward, trusted facility that’s been performing these procedures for over a decade.

Q: Are there any procedures MCVS plans to implement in the near future?

We are now implementing a new program for mommy makeovers. These are surgeries that combine tummy tuck (performed by a board certified plastic surgeon) and vaginoplasty or vaginal rejuvenation. The goal is to return the patient’s body to the state it was in prior to pregnancies.
