The Discovery House, a luxury drug treatment center located in Southern California, appeared on episode three of the Emmy Award-winning television series, Intervention, a show that follows addicts and their loved one’s through the setup and follow through of an addiction intervention.
The show essentially follows subjects who believe they are being filmed for a documentary highlighting their substance dependence, but really they are being led to an intervention that is orchestrated by their loved ones and a professional interventionist. The subject of this particular episode, Kacy, has a true riches to rags story and it really spotlights that addiction can happen to anyone, no matter how successful or wealthy they are in life.
Kacy had it all, wealth, success, and a loving family. At just 18, she had her real estate license and at 22 she bought her first hotel. She was living the American Dream. Until a traumatic event thrust her into a severe case of alcoholism that caused her to lose everything. Everything except her family, which she stood to lose if she didn’t go through with treatment. She has tried and failed to maintain her sobriety for almost ten years, forcing her feelings and problems away by drinking three bottles of vodka each day.
Though Kacy’s case is dire, this caliber of alcoholism happens to thousands of people all over the country. Each year, 88,000 people die from alcohol-related causes, making it the third leading preventable cause of death in the United States.
