Liquid chromatography is an analytical or investigative technique that is useful for separating molecules or ions, dissolved in a solvent. Increased automation and technological advancement in instruments, increasing demand from biotechnological and pharmaceutical companies, and also in the screening of disorders and drug discovery are some of the major reasons for the market growth.
Recent developments in commercially available instrumentation for 2D liquid chromatography have significantly increased the rate of acceptance of 2D-LC practices for a wide variety of applications in the biopharmaceutical and pharmaceutical industries. Column technology for the technique has benefited largely from these technologies, which were introduced for ultrahigh-pressure LC. Narrow-bore columns or short columns for reversed-phase LC filled with Superficially porous particles, or with sub-2-µm or both, have been involved in developing fast separations in this technique of 2D separation. Though innovation in these technologies for chiral applications and reversed-phase liquid chromatography has enhanced over the last decade, columns designed to advance performance and speed of biopharmaceutical analysis was restricted.
In 2016, development in the analytical and life science instrumentation market increases up to the pace in past few years. Collective sales of the top firms accounted for around half of the total market.

North America, being a developed economy and hence pharmaceutical and biotechnological industry, is anticipated to command the maximum market share, which is more than 50% of total liquid chromatography instruments market. Rapidly increasing use of such analytical techniques in analysis and food testing in the country and increasing advancement in two-dimensional liquid chromatography technique are some of the other reasons propelling the market growth in the region. The Asia Pacific, with its developing economies, is expected to contribute to the the fastest growing segment. Improving healthcare infrastructure and increasing concern for food safety are some of the major reasons for the fastest growth of this region.
Increasing obligation for food safety is expected to limit the chemical content, the increase in demand in pharmaceutical & biotechnology industry for chemical & concentration identifications, and continuous research in academic and research institutes are together propelling the growth of the market.
The major market players of Global liquid Chromatography instrument market includes; Thermo Fisher Scientific Inc., Shimadzu Corp, Agilent Technologies, Waters Corporation, Bruker Corporation PerkinElmer, Phenomenex among others. Major players such as Agilent, Thermo Fisher Scientific, Shimadzu, and Waters, together are expected to command the maximum share of the global liquid chromatography instrument market.
High competition among these major market players and global presence also creates the entry barriers for new entrants as well as tough competition, restricting them to flourish in the market.
With more than double the equipment sales of its nearest competitor, Thermo Fisher easily stayed at the top of the analytical instrument suppliers. Thermo Fisher’s instrument sales grew modestly, with acquisitions being a major factor. In 2016, the company spent a total of $5.5 billion to purchase Affymetrix, which had about $350 million in annual sales of cellular and genetic analysis products. To leverage near-term tailwinds from the East, the company continued to build on its capabilities in India, China, South Korea, and Singapore. This year, the company intends to capitalize on long-term opportunities in Brazil, Russia, and the Middle East.
To build in these core areas, Danaher completed about $5 billion in acquisitions last year. Deals included spending $4 billion for the molecular diagnostics firm Cepheid and an unspecified amount for the chromatography supplier Phenomenex. With the help of these two purchases and the 2015 buy of purification specialist Pall Corp., Danaher’s life sciences instrumentation sales are now more than $2 billion.
Another market player, Shimadzu, in spite of some currency fluctuations in 2016, increased its instrument sales by 5%. Also, in 2016, the company added innovation centres in Europe and Singapore to existing ones in China and the U.S. for doing R&D activities with research institutions, universities, and companies. Shimadzu opened an instrument manufacturing plant in Malaysia. It invested $12 million in Brazil to acquire SINC do Brasil Instrumentação Científica, expand a customer training facility, and add a lab for developing analysis methods.
