Larry and Get Real Recovery attending the HIMS conference September 24th-26 in Denver Colorado

Alcohol and substance abuse are serious problems among pilots today. It’s one that the Human Intervention Motivation Study, or HIMS, strives to improve. The organization brings together the efforts of companies, pilot unions, and the FAA to preserve the careers of pilots and increase air safety.

San Juan Capistrano, CA – September 11, 2018 – HIMS is an occupational substance abuse treatment program created by pilots, for pilots. Pilots are increasingly affected by the disease of alcoholism and chemical dependencies, just as the general population. Once participants successfully complete the HIMS program, they return to the cockpit under FAA Special Issuance Regulations.

The primary goal of HIMS is to identify pilots with addictions, treat them, and help get them back to the cockpit. These entities have one thing in common; they all recognize that addiction to alcohol and drugs is a disease. It isn’t something that just goes away. This is especially true because of the types of stress that pilots endure. Once they lose control of the situation, they aren’t likely to admit that they have a problem. It’s the nature of the job for pilots to always be in control. Failing to admit they have an addiction prevents them from getting the help they need.

Pilots started the HIMS program for pilots as a means for those who are impaired to get the treatment they need without losing their ability to fly. It gives hope to those people who think they have a drinking or substance abuse problem and don’t know what to do about it.

The program benefits the pilots and the companies they work for. It prevents them from having the expense of replacing a pilot. It also makes flying a much safer event for everyone.

The HIMS Seminar

The HIMS Seminar is an opportunity for participants to learn about other people’s ideas and beliefs on addiction. All first-time attendees must be vetted and invited to attend. This year, the event is being held in Denver, Colorado from September 24th through the 26th. Larry Smith and Get Real Recovery will attend to share in the educational and inspirational experience.

Some significant events on the agenda include:

• Dr. Altman Survey – Dr. David Altman will give a presentation on the knowledge and beliefs the HIMS participants have on recovery. Each participant must complete the 3- minute survey online so that the results can be collated and presented during the seminar. It’s a great way to find out what the participants have in common and the areas where they differ.

• Special Presentations – Some of note include an HIMS overview, video, and database presented by Quay Snyder, MD, and Capt. Corey Slone, along with “The Disease Effects and DOT Testing Issues” by Nicholas Lomangino, MD.

• Professional Breakouts – Peer monitors, neuropsychologists, psychiatrists, counselors, and family support volunteers are just some of the participants in the professional breakouts.
