Kuester Management Group Shares Tips for Addressing the HOA Board

Kuester Management Group reveals some of the best ways for homeowners to address an HOA Board meeting.

Most HOA Board meetings are “open” meetings—meaning that any member of the Association is allowed to participate. In fact, homeowners who have questions or concerns are not only permitted but often encouraged to present them at the HOA Board meeting. To do so, there are certain protocols that should be upheld; in a new statement to the press, Kuester Management Group shares what some of those protocols entail.

“If you’d like to present something to your HOA Board, it’s best to submit it in writing, at least a week or so in advance,” comments Bryan Kuester, President of Kuester Management Group. This is not mandatory, but it does provide the community manager with time to do some research, and Board members with time to think through the question or request and provide a well-informed answer.

Similarly, homeowners who wish to address the HOA Board are encouraged to call in advance. “This allows the HOA Board to include you in their meeting agenda, and it also allows them to contact you directly should the meeting get cancelled or rescheduled,” says Kuester. Again, it is not mandatory, but it can be beneficial.

It is also important to have the proper expectations. “Your Board members will certainly listen to what you have to say, but they may need to do some research or simply think on the matter further before giving you an answer,” Kuester observes. “Don’t expect immediate results.”

Those who address the HOA Board are encouraged to keep their comments brief and to the point. “Generally speaking, you’ll want to limit your remarks to five minutes at the very most,” Kuester affirms.

Finally, those who live in the HOA and need answers to simple questions—about finances, HOA regulations, or the Board’s position on a given matter—may be able to obtain that information just by calling the community manager.

“Sometimes you can save yourself a trip to the meeting just by calling the manager and asking for some assistance,” Kuester concludes.
