Kuester Management Group Reveals Best Ways to Educate New HOA Board Members

Kuester Management Group has released a new statement to the press, sharing some of the best practices for bringing new HOA Board members up to speed.

Serving on the HOA Board is a distinct honor—and a major responsibility. For new Board members, it can seem daunting. One of the best ways to overcome this is through education. The existing Board members can do much to bring newcomers up to speed. In a new statement to the press, Kuester Management Group reveals some of the best strategies for educating new Board members.

“The first thing we’d recommend is putting together a Board member handbook,” comments Bryan Kuester, President of Kuester Management Group. “This can be an invaluable resource for newcomers, but also a helpful reference for more seasoned Board members.” The handbook can include basic information about Board member duties and hierarchies; the schedule of meetings and events; contact information for the property management company; and any other general facts or data points about the HOA.

Another tip is to host an orientation event. “Each year, as you welcome new members to the Board, schedule some time for all Board members to get together, talk, set goals, and get on the same page,” comments Kuester. “This can facilitate mentorship between experienced and new members.”

Existing Board members should emphasize enforcement, too. “You don’t want newcomers to be overzealous, but it is important for them to know the rules and regulations, and to be prepared to enforce them with consistency,” remarks Kuester.

Kuester also recommends spending some time simply going over the governing documents. “Once or twice a year, get everyone together for a refresher on your Association’s rules and regulations, just making sure everyone’s clear,” he says.

A final tip is to seek educational resources from the property management company. “Here at Kuester Management Group, we’re big on education, and we have a lot of great resources and opportunities for getting new Board members up to speed,” Kuester concludes. “If you’re curious about some of these possibilities, reach out to your property manager today.”
