Katie Singleton moved to Los Angeles to pursue acting, 2 weeks later she auditioned for 10 Days In A Madhouse and landed the role

Katie Singleton plays Mrs. Caine in 10 Days in A Madhouse – the Nellie Bly story, premiering in US theaters November 20th, 2015. Hollywood insiders are calling her performance, “brilliant”.
A theater kid at heart, Katie Singleton didn’t even finished unpacking before she found a nationwide audition notice for the upcoming film 10 Days In A Madhouse. She booked the role and impressed director Timothy Hines so much that he calls her “one of the best actors he has ever worked with”.

Every year, hundreds of Hollywood hopefuls move to Los Angeles with bright eyes and big dreams to make it in the entertainment industry. Every year, hundreds realize it’s not for them. That realization is not in the cards for the talented Santa Cruz native Katie Singleton, who stars alongside Christopher Lambert in the upcoming film 10 Days In A Madhouse – The Nellie Bly Story.

Katie Singleton recalls the phone call between her and director Timothy Hines when he offered her the role. He exclaimed with much enthusiasm that she is “a wonderful actress” and that she “truly has something special”. Hines is not the only one noticing her immense talent—industry insiders who have previewed the film at the Cannes Film Festival and Bentonville Film Festival are calling her performance “brilliant”.

Singleton grew up performing in local theater plays and student films, but it wasn’t until her freshman year of high school that she decided to pursue acting as a career. Her father, once an actor who quit the industry to take care of his children, warned her about the struggles that come with choosing this life path: constant rejection, little money, long hours, and potentially damaged self-esteem. Singleton took her father’s words very seriously, but decided not to give up on her passion. With her dad’s full support, Singleton made the move to LA in order to pursue her interests both in front of and behind the camera. Currently, she is working as an art department production assistant alongside acclaimed production designer Melanie Jones. Singleton is credited with working on Academy-Award winning movie WhiplashThe Lazarus Effect and many commercials.

10 Days In A Madhouse – The Nellie Bly Story, which had a triumphant premiere at the Cannes Film Festival, follows the true story of the world’s first investigative journalist, Nellie Bly, as she feigns madness in order to get herself committed into an insane asylum for women. Bly, performed by fellow newcomer Caroline Barry, goes on to write an exposé revealing to the world all the horrible things she witnessed, including abuse, violence and even murder. For risking her life, Nellie Bly is considered an American hero and a trailblazer of human rights and gender equality. Bly is currently being considered to be the face of the new ten dollar bill.

Before Bly enters the mental ward, she encounters a woman named Mrs. Caine who “was as courageous as she was good-hearted” – a line taken directly from Bly’s exposé. Mrs. Caine, played by Singleton, is the woman who is responsible for sending Nellie into the madhouse with the intention of getting her help. Singleton’s portrayal of the compassionate Mrs. Caine brings a sense of hope to the otherwise dark and tragic sequence of the film. Singleton says that her character is “one of the few characters in the movie who is a positive influence, a shining light.” There is a “sympathetic quality” to Mrs. Caine who “just wants the best for the poor girl”. 10 Days In A Madhouse – The Nellie Bly Story is set to release in US theaters on November 20th.
