Black Belt Adult GI winners receive complimentary flight ticket to the Grand Slam event in Abu Dhabi (January 2017)
Abu Dhabi, UAE – 27 July, 2016 – The world’s best Jiu-jitsu players from across the globe are preparing to battle it out at the first leg of the Abu Dhabi Grand Slam. The UAE Jiu-Jitsu Federation (UAEJJF), the official authority for Jiu-Jitsu in the United Arab Emirates, has announced that the first leg of the championship series, is set to take place in Los Angeles, USA at the L.A Convention Center on the 3rd and 4th September.
In its second year, the Abu Dhabi Grand Slam has already laid the foundations and earned the respect from the peers, as the most prestigious Jiu-Jitsu championship series in the world. The UAE Jiu-Jitsu Federation has injected a new lease of life into the sport of Jiu-Jitsu and it’s development into commercializing and making it an Olympic sport.
His Highness General Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Crown Prince of Abu Dhabi and Deputy Supreme Commander of the UAE Armed Forces has showed incredible support for the development of the sport of Jiu-Jitsu in the UAE, regionally and most importantly globally with the Abu Dhabi Grand Slam.
“Los Angeles is a city that holds the sport of Jiu-Jitsu in very high regards and has some of the best players train and live over there. This is a highly competitive sport and we attract the best of the best Jiu-Jitsu players from across the globe,” said H.E Abdulmunam Al Hashemi, Chairman of the UAE Jiu-Jitsu Federation.
“Last year the spectators witnessed some thrilling entertainment and this year we are aspiring to exceed our own expectations and take the Abu Dhabi Grand Slam to the next level, starting from the beautiful city of Los Angeles. I wish all players the best of luck,” said H.E Abdulmunam Al Hashemi.
The first leg of the Abu Dhabi Grand Slam in Los Angeles will offer over $100,000 in cash prize and Black Belt Adult GI winners will receive complimentary flight ticket to the Grand Slam event in Abu Dhabi in January 2017.
Medals will be awarded for the 1st, 2nd, and 3rd places in each division. Prize money awarded will range from $500 to $2,000 in several categories, including juvenile, adult and masters, from blue, purple, brown and black categories for both men and women.
The first-place winner in the respective weight categories of the Abu Dhabi Grand Slam will receive 200 points. The second-place winner will receive 160 points and the third-place winner will receive 120 points.
Top confirmed competitors to take part in Los Angeles on 3rd and 4th September will include black belt champions Erberth Santos, Ricardo Evangelista, Tiago Bravo, Andre Campos, Paulo Miyao, Faisal Alketbi, Igor Silva, the world champion Mackenzie Dern and Marcio Andre.
“I am so excited and cannot wait for the Abu Dhabi Grand Slam to kick off in Los Angeles. I competed at the Abu Dhabi World Pro Championship in Abu Dhabi in April and it was one of my best experiences as an athlete. They treated us the best way possible and everything was absolutely top notch. To all my fans, I will see you on 3rd & 4th September in LA,” said Mackenzie Dern, Brazilain Jiu-Jitsu Black Belt world champion.
UAEJJF rules will strictly apply during the competition, with a special rules briefing workshop being conducted for coaches and players a day before the event.
A trophy will be awarded to the best club as well and there’s also a special award for the black belt adult division champions.
