It’s Cool 2 Walk to School promotes student health, wellness

The Chula Vista Elementary School District recognizes that academic success depends on student health and is always looking for new ways to promote physical education, proper nutrition, and overall wellness.

To increase the number of families that walk and bike to and from school, the district has partnered with various public and nonprofit organizations for It’s Cool 2 Walk to School, a grant-funded program that encourage “non-vehicle” transportation in disadvantaged communities.

It’s Cool 2 Walk to School includes 27 CVESD schools, including the four target schools that receive increased focus.

The new initiative aligns with the District health and wellness policy and has currently expanded to 27 CVESD school, which include four target school: Hazel Goes Cook, Juarez-Lincoln, Karl H. Kellogg, and Lauderbach.

Each school holds weekly It’s Cool 2 Walk to School events, which allows students the opportunity to win special prizes and incentives based on the amount of physical activity completed. Once students arrive at school, parent and teacher volunteers scan the barcode on a student’s card, which keeps track of each child’s physical activity.

Through this program, the district hopes to help parents and local communities build a stronger relationship with the district and its nearly 30,000 students. As families enjoy walking or biking to school together each morning, communities will benefit from decreased traffic and a safer environment.

The grant has also allowed for the district to plan and design improvements in areas surrounding elementary schools to increase mobility and safety for pedestrians and students who participate in the Cool 2 Walk to School program.
