Innovation Expo Encourages Different Kinds of Thinking

District Event Celebrates Creativity

South Bay Union celebrated the district’s Year of Innovation by highlighting student creativity and imagination throughout its Innovation Expo in April 2017. The collaboration of students, parents, and staff made a full day event possible, which offered a variety of engagement opportunities. Adult and student speakers shed light on their exploration of creativity in their individual communities. Emory student Anthony Carter shared his experiences with robotics and coding. Emma Tubbs, student from IB Charter, took an interactive approach, teaching participants how to make slime from basic household ingredients. Other speakers included Ed Hidalgo who spoke about Qualcomm’s Thinkabit Lab and Loui Ceron who spoke about Seaworld conservation. The wide range of experiences generously shared by these speakers shed light on the various and diverse channels of impact that a person can have if dedicated to creativity and intellectual growth.

In addition to the perspectives of these speakers, participants learned from discovery stations set up in the Exploration Zone. South Bay’s String Quintet and Let’s Dance Kids brought on the music and moves with lively performances throughout the event. Participants were also able to dress up as superheroes to take pictures in the photo booth.

Events like the Innovation Expo, which emphasize creativity and imagination, expose students of South Bay early on to possible careers and academic pursuits they can aspire to.
