Los Angeles, CA – May 30, 2018 – “It’s great listening to every artists’ story first hand, re-collecting their triumphs, during that time period. Getting the stories first hand, gives a great authenticity to that specific time period when the world of music was changing.” – JP’s Music Blog, Jim Pasinski on ‘BIG GOLD DREAM’.

During the late-seventies/early-eighties, two small, independent music labels, FAST Product and Postcard Records, emerged from Scotland. Though both short-lived, Director Grant McPhee’s ‘BIG GOLD DREAM: SCOTTISH POST PUNK AND INFILTRATING THE MAINSTREAM’ captures the labels’ revolutionary roles in the ‘70s punk movement to ‘80s pop music, creating Scotland’s launch pad for little known bands like Scars, Orange Juice, Dead Kennedys, The Human League, Josef K, and early Joy Division, to be pushed out into America mainstream, eventually creating a name for themselves and going down in music history.

“Most of the world is unaware of their importance to the modern day music scene […but] ‘BIG GOLD DREAM’ provides the missing link tot today’s alternative/punk music,” wrote Pasinski. He added, “Director Grant McPhee does an outstanding job using classic, raw film footage and interweaving interviews to describe the music scene in Scotland.”

Narrated by Robert Forster (The Go-Betweens),‘BIG GOLD DREAM’ begins in 1977 with archival footage of The Clash’s arrival in Scotland’s music scene. McPhee’s feature-length music documentary preserves Scotland’s music gems and their legacies while showcasing how FAST Product and Postcard records were able to sustain and transform the indie-artist culture worldwide. “The film states that Postcard Records rivaled FAST Product as two of the fastest rising music labels in Scotland. While Postcard Records lasted just as long as FAST Product, these two indie music labels may have laid the blueprint for building your own independent music recording label,” observed Pasinski.

Established by Bob Last, alongside Hilary Morrison, FAST Product represented new indie bands just emerging into Edinburgh’s music scene, trying to make a name for themselves in the punk and post-punk world. The label emphasized their mantra of avoiding “mainstream” music, solely acquiring artists from Edinburgh who were extremely forward thinking, aiming to create their own unique sound. FAST Product “released singles by bands lie Scars and Gang Of Four. The discovery of The Human League helped the FAST label skyrocket in sales,” wrote Pasinski, adding that despite the label’s short-lived time of two years, FAST Product’s “inspiration still echoes in today’s indie-market.”

Unlike FAST Product, Postcard Records was considered to be more mainstream. Established by Alan Horne (who is not pictured in the film), Postcard Records frequently featured popular, radio-friendly musicians from the Glasglow area, full of catchy pop tunes. Postcard Record took on bands “with a cleaner, more polished, ‘post-punk,’ pop sound,” described Pasinski, beginning with their flagship band, Orange Juice, and later, signing The Go-Betweens and Aztec Camera.

“It’s great listening to every artists’ story first hand, re-collecting their triumphs, during that time period. Getting the stories first hand, gives a great authenticity to that specific time period when the world of music was changing,” concluded Pasinski.
