Italy continued its dominance in the global wrapping paper trade. In 2014, Italy exported 44.9 thousand tonnes of wrapping paper totaling 54.4 million USD, 4% over the previous year. Its primary trading partner was the U.S., where it supplied 20% of its total wrapping paper exports in value terms, accounting for 96% of the U.S. total imports.
Overall, the global wrapping paper trade dropped to 139.8 million USD, with a CAGR of 1.3% from 2007 to 2014. In physical terms, it showed decline, falling from 122 thousand tonnes in 2007 to 110 thousand tonnes in 2014.
In 2014, Spain (9.3%), the U.S. (6.9%), Germany (6.8%), France (5.5%) and the United Kingdom (5.3%) were the leading destinations of wrapping paper imports, together making up 33.9% of global imports. The share of the U.S. increased (+4 percentage points), while the share of France illustrated negative dynamics (-2 percentage points).
Italy and the Netherlands were among the other main global suppliers of wrapping paper in 2014 with a combined share of 50.1% of global exports. However, the fastest growing exporters from 2007 to 2014 were Malaysia (+28.2% per year) and the Russian Federation (+19.6% per year). Italy significantly strengthened its position in the global export structure, from 23% in 2007 to 39% in 2014.
