Canada continued its dominance in the global trade of pulp for paper. In 2014, Canada exported 2,930 thousand tonnes of pulp totaling 1,790 million USD, 9% under the previous year. Its primary trading partner was China, where it supplied 46% of its total pulp for paper exports in value terms, accounting for 29% of China’s total imports.
Overall, the global pulp for paper trade reached 7,662 million USD, with a CAGR of 5% from 2007 to 2014. In physical terms, it increased from 8,632 thousand tonnes in 2007 to 10,095 thousand tonnes in 2014.
In 2014, China (35%) was the leading destination of pulp for paper imports, followed by Germany (10%), Indonesia (8%), the U.S. (6%) and India (5%). These five leaders together made up 64% of global imports. The share of China increased significantly (+14 percentage points), while the share of Germany illustrated negative dynamics (-1 percentage points).
The U.S. and South Africa were among the other main global suppliers of pulp for paper in 2014 with a combined share of 29% of global exports. However, the fastest growing exporters from 2007 to 2014 were Brazil (+25% per year) and the U.S. (+12% per year). The U.S. strengthened its position in the global export structure, from 12% in 2007 to 19% in 2014.
