China is one of the leaders in the global nitrogenous fertilizer trade. In 2014, China exported 18.6 million tonnes of nitrogenous fertilizers, totaling 4.8 billion USD, a remarkable 46% over the previous year. Its primary trading partner was India, where it supplied 37.3% of its total nitrogenous fertilizer exports in value terms, accounting for 21.7% of India’s total imports.
From 2007 to 2014, China was a net exporter of nitrogenous fertilizers. Over this period, exports consistently exceeded imports in value terms. However, from 2011 to 2014, in physical terms, the difference was more pronounced due to high import prices.
The Netherlands and Belgium were among the other main global suppliers of nitrogenous fertilizers in 2014. However, the fastest growing exporters from 2007 to 2014 were Egypt (+49.2% per year) and China (+16.2% per year). China significantly strengthened its position in the global export structure.
In 2014, China’s top 5 trading partners were India, the U.S., Mexico, Pakistan and Malaysia with a combined 67.8% share of China’s exports. The share of India increased significantly (+7.2 percentage points), while the share of Mexico illustrated modest negative dynamics (-0.7 percentage points).
