Canada dominates in the global newsprint trade. In 2014, Canada exported 3,885 thousand tonnes of newsprint totaling 2,369 million USD, 2% over the previous year. Its primary trading partner was the U.S., where it supplied 58% of its total newsprint exports in value terms, accounting for the lion’s share of the U.S. total imports.
Overall, the global newsprint trade dropped to 7,048 million USD, with a CAGR of 5% from 2007 to 2014. In physical terms, it decreased from 15,811 thousand tonnes in 2007 to 11,589 thousand tonnes in 2014.
In 2014, the U.S. (18%), India (12%), Germany (8%), Italy (6%) and the United Kingdom (5%) were the leading destinations of newsprint imports, together making up 48% of global imports. The share of India increased (+7 percentage points), while the share of the United Kingdom illustrated negative dynamics (-6 percentage points).
The Russian Federation and Sweden were among the other main global suppliers of newsprint in 2014 with a combined share of 17% of global exports. However, the fastest growing exporters from 2007 to 2014 were Switzerland (+13% per year) and the United Kingdom (+9% per year). The Russian Federation strengthened its position in the global export structure, from 6% in 2007 to 9% in 2014.
